Naxalism in India : In the year 2006 Former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh has termed naxalism as “single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country”.  Now after 17 years later, there are still 47 districts in India- officially marked as LWE affected. The data suggests that off-late India has been handling the internal threat better. Let’s see how data tells about the status of LWE violence in India.

Naxalism in India cost more than 5500 lives  since 2009

In the year 2010 India has witnessed 2213 incidents which claimed 1005 lives. While the Year2021 number of incidents reduced to 531 and deaths has also seen a significant drop 98).

Naxal Affected Districts in India are declining

In 2006, PM Manmohan Singh has admitted that growth of Naxalism. He said, " Naxalism has spread to but has gained in strength and has now spread to over 160 districts all over the country".

In the year 2017, India has 106 districts officially marked as LWE affected districts. It reduced to 90 districts in 2019. In the year 2021 LWE affected districts came down to 47.

Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand accounts for 75% of LWE Deaths in 2021

Annual Report of MHA for the year 2021-22 states that there are 509 incidents reported in which 147 deaths registered. In 2021, Chhattisgarh (255 incidents and 101 deaths) remains the worst affected State, followed by Jharkhand (130 incidents and 26 deaths), Odisha (32 incidents and 03 deaths), Maharashtra (31 incidents and 06 deaths) and Bihar (26 incidents and 07 deaths).

 

Similarly in last 13 year Country has lost 5217 lives due to LWE violence. Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand has reported 1969 and 1327 deaths respectively, which is almost 2/3 of total causalities.

Incidents of Maoist Attacks on Cops in Jharkhand in Recent Years

5 Jan, 2022: Chaibasa: Bodies of two policemen, killed in a Maoist attack in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district recovered.

4 March, 2021: Three Jharkhand Police personnel were killed and two others injured, including one from CRPF, as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off in West Singhbum district.

31 May, 2020 : Two persons, including a constable, were killed when Maoists opened fire on a police team in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district.

23 Nov, 2019 : Maoists ambushed a police control room (PCR) van, killing an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and three policemen Chandwa in Latehar district.

14 June, 2019: Five police personnel were killed in an ambush by Maoists Friday while they were patrolling the area at Jharkhand's Saraikela district.

 

Incidents of Maoist Attacks in Chhattisgarh in Recent Years

26 April, 2023: Ten police personnel and their driver were killed in a blast carried out by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district

April 2021 :22 security personnel killed in gunfight with Naxals in Terram jungles along the borders of Bijapur and Sukma districts.

March 2018 : Nine Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel killed in IED blast triggered by Maoists in Sukma district.

April 24, 2017 : 25CRPF personnel killed in an encounter with Maoists in Sukma.

March 12, 2017 : 12 CRPF jawans killed in a Maoist attack in Sukma.
March 11, 2014 : 15 security personnel killed in a Maoist attack in Sukma district
