Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled 3 new legislative bills on the last day of the Monsoon session of the parliament. These bills include Indian Justice Code 2023, Indian Civil Safety Code 2023, and Indian Evidence Bill 2023.

These bills will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Evidence Act of the British era. These three bills are being sent to the parliamentary committee for judicial inquiry. Proposed laws have the provision of capital punishment for mob lynching and minor rape.

Apart from this, amendments are proposed in cases related to sedition. While tabling three bills Home Minister Amit Shah said, “The focus of the old laws was to strengthen British rule and secure them. These were not meant to deliver justice to the people of India. From 1860 till now, the criminal justice system was based on British laws. The purpose of the new bills is not to punish but to do justice.”

Mr. Shah said Prime Minister took 5 pledges on 15 August from the rampart of Lal Quila. One of the pledges was to erase all the signs of colonial rule. Three bills brought by me today are fulfilling one of the pledges by PM Modi.
