More than 3.33 Lakh Rape Cases After Nirbhaya Case in 2012

Since the harrowing Nirbhaya case in 16 December, 2012, which brought global attention to the issue of sexual violence in India, the country has witnessed a staggering rise in reported rape cases. More than 3.33 lakh rape cases have been documented, reflecting a troubling trend in the prevalence of sexual violence.

This significant number underscores not only the scale of the problem but also raises critical questions about the effectiveness of legal reforms and preventive measures introduced in the aftermath of the Nirbhaya case.

Just 27.4 % Conviction Rate of Rapes( Acquittal in 3 out of 4 cases)

The conviction rate for rape cases in India is just 27.4%. This means that out of every four rape cases, three result in acquittals. This stark statistic highlights the issues within the criminal justice system of the country. The high rate of acquittals not only undermines public confidence in the justice system but it also leads to belief that even stronger laws after Nirbhaya case can’t make our daughter safe.

Women are double unsafe in Home than strangers

Women face a greater risk of violence at home compared to from strangers. NCRB data reveals that in 7.37% of rape cases accused are family members, highlighting the significant danger posed by those within the home. In contrast, only 3.37% of cases involve unknown perpetrators. This discrepancy underscores the alarming fact that women are often at higher risk of sexual violence from familiar individuals than from strangers, emphasizing the need for focused measures to address domestic threats.

Rajasthan records most rape cases but Uttarakhand has highest crime rate

Rajasthan reports the highest number of rape cases in India, reflecting a significant volume of sexual violence incidents within the state. However, despite the large number of recorded cases, the crime rate—measured as the number of incidents per 100,000 people—is highest in Uttarakhand. This indicates that while Rajasthan has a greater total number of rape cases, Uttarakhand experiences a higher rate of sexual violence relative to its population size.

Jaipur, Not Delhi, Emerges as Most Unsafe City for Women

Delhi has frequently been labeled as the “rape capital” in media reports due to high-profile cases and significant attention in the media. The high visibility of these cases, combined with a large population and extensive media coverage, contributes to this perception. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean Delhi has the highest rate of rape incidents compared to other cities. Jaipur, like many other cities, also faces issues with sexual violence, but it doesn’t have the same level of media attention or perceived notoriety as Delhi. In terms of Crime Rate Jaipur has 34 cases per lakh population – which is highest in India. Indore is second with 16.8 cases per lakh population. Despite having highest rape cases among cities (1204), Delhi (15.9) is number 3 on Crime rate parameter.
