Homeless In India : According to the 2011 census, state-wise data shows that 17.73 lakh  people in the country do not have a roof over their heads. The worrying aspect is that there are more homeless people in cities compared to rural areas. In the country’s capital, Delhi, the highest number of homeless people (282) live per lakh of population. Let’s find out the situation of homelessness in your state.

68 % of population lives in Villages but cities has more homeless

Even though 68% of the country’s population lives in rural areas, there are more homeless people in urban areas.Out of the total 1.773 million homeless people, 0.834 million reside in rural areas, while more than 0.938 million are homeless in urban areas.

In rural areas of the country, 47% of the total homeless population lives, while in urban areas, 53% of the total homeless population resides.

Uttar Pradesh has largest share of homeless in India


In terms of number of homeless people per lakh of population, Uttar Pradesh (3.29 lakh) has the highest number of homeless people in the country, followed by Maharashtra (2.10 lakh), Rajasthan (1.8 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (1.46 lakh), Andhra Pradesh (1.45 lakh), Gujarat (1.44 lakh), and West Bengal (1.34 lakh). These are the states where more than a lakh of people do not have a home.

Delhi has highest homeless per lakh of population

Similarly, if we consider the number of homeless people per lakh of population, Delhi has the highest number (282) in the country. Following Delhi, Rajasthan (265) and Gujarat (239) have a significant number of homeless people. Goa (218), Haryana (205), Madhya Pradesh (202), Maharashtra (188), Andhra Pradesh (172), Punjab (169), Uttar Pradesh (165), Manipur (161), Jammu and Kashmir (152), and West Bengal (147) also have a higher number of homeless people per lakh of population compared to the national average (146).

PMAYG may change it

There is hope for change through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAYG).These figures are based on the 2011 census data, and it's quite likely that conditions have improved a lot. As of 2022, under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the construction of more than 2.46 crore houses has been approved in rural areas, with over 80% (more than 2.01 crore) of them already built. Additionally, 1.22 crore houses have been approved for urban populations, with 51% (63.27 lakh) of them already constructed.
